Pro-Opie & Anthony support is coming from a very unusual place: their advertisers. A couple of clients are actually dropping their advertising on XM Satellite Radio because XM Satellite Radio suspended the duo. "It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality," wrote Lou Galli, general manager for Nashville Coffee, on the company’s Web site. Link: Advertiser Ire Over Opie & Anthony Suspension. The LA Times editorialized on the "coincidental" censuring by XM Radio just as its merger with Sirius is contingent on FCC approval, here. As we've often pointed out, even if a media or telecom company is not explicitly subject to FCC oversight of its content, because these companies all have business before the FCC, they must implicitly toe the line set by the FCC or risk harm to their businesses. Which is another reason why the FCC's Content Crusade is not merely a bad idea; it's flat-out dangerous, as it cuts such a wide and blunt swath across so much of our nation's media.
